US Sire Way West Euthanased

Wednesday, 26th April 2006

US 16-year-old stakes-winner & sire Way West (Gone West-Greenway, by Targowice) was euthanased at O'Sullivan Farms in West Virginia (where he stood since 2004) "due to laminitis," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Way West began his stallion career in 1996 at Florida's Sez Who Thoroughbreds & later moved to Florida's CloverLeaf Farms II in 2002 & 2003. He has sired 123 winners (4 stakes-winners) from 191 starters in 8 crops of racing age for US$7,002,159 progeny earnings; he has 31 current 2YOs. Way West's best runner (from his 2nd crop) is multiple graded stakes-winner Western Pride (who won the 2001 Gr2 Ohio Derby, 2001 Gr3 Calder Derby, 2001 West Virginia Derby, 2002 Gr2 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes & 2003 Gr3 San Bernardino Handicap). On the track himself, Way West won 3 of 18 starts (including a stakes victory & 4 group placings) in France. He is a half-brother to Gerbera (dam of stakes-winner Renashaan, who produced international Gr1 winner Alexander Goldrun & Gr3 winner Medecis).
