Leading Canadian Owner Stavro Dies

Steve Stavro (who owned 6 Canadian champions which won 8 Sovereign Awards) has died aged 78, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Stavro (who bought his 1st horse in the 1960s) raced & bred via his Knob Hill Stables (named after his Toronto-based grocery chain). His highlights include: victory in the 1988 Gr1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland with Ontario-bred Granacus (the last Canadian horse to win the Blue Grass); victory in the 1992 Prince Of Wales Stakes with home-bred Benburb (who upset 1-20 favorite Alydeed); victory in the 1992 Molson Export Million Stakes with Benburb (who again defeated Alydeed & US champ A.P.Indy) & was named Canada's champion 3YO colt & Horse-Of-The-Year; home-bred filly Apelia being named Canada's 1992 champion sprinter; Bold Debra being named Canada's 1992 Broodmare-Of-The-Year; home-bred Thornfield winning the 1999 Gr1 Canadian International Stakes & being named champion grass horse & Horse-Of-The-Year; home-bred filly Saoirse being named 2000 champion older mare; & home-bred filly Chopinina being named 2002 champion grass mare.
