1st US Starter For Melb Cup

Friday, 28th April 2006

This year's $5.1 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) is likely to include an American-owned runner for the 1st time in the race's 146-year history after prominent US owner Ken Ramsey confirmed with Racing Victoria his 4YO home-bred stayer Nolan's Cat (by Catienus) is being directed towards this year's race on Tuesday November 7 at Flemington. Ramsey (racing in partnership with his wife Sarah) won the coveted Eclipse Award as Leading US Owners in 2004 & was Leading Owner in the world based on prize-money in 2005. Nolan's Cat showed his promise as a 3YO when he ran 3rd to Afleet Alex in last year's Gr1 Belmont Stakes while still a maiden (finishing well ahead of Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo.) Meanwhile Ramsey confirmed he is considering brining 2 horses to Australia: the other is 5YO Badge Of Silver (by Silver Deputy) who would be aimed at the $3 million Gr1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley 10 days before the Melbourne Cup (on Saturday 28 October).
