Munce Detained In Hong Kong

Wednesday, 5th July 2006

Leading Sydney jockey Chris Munce, who was due to fly back to Sydney following a successful season in Hong Kong, "was arrested by Hong Kong's anti-corruption watchdog last night after an inquiry into alleged illegal tip-offs," reports The Sydney Morning Herald. "Six further arrests were made, including four suspected illegal bookmakers and two other people alleged to have acted as middlemen." The allegation against Munce by the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption is that "he had accepted advantages from illegal bookmakers or middlemen and punters for providing tips about his mounts." Munce finished the just-completed Hong Kong season in 3rd place with 51 winners on the jockey's table (won for the 6th successive season by South Africa's Douglas Whyte).
