English Channel Wins Gr1 United Nations

Turning the tables on his Gr1 Manhattan Handicap conqueror 5YO entire Cacique, 4YO entire English Channel (Smart Strike-Belva, by Theatrical) was too good at Monmouth Park in the US$750,000 Gr1 United Nations Handicap (1 3/8-mile), "prevailing by a half-length," over Cacique (Danehill-Hasili, by Kahyasi), reported thoroughbredtimes.com. The top 2 runners engaged in a battle from the top of the turn, however English Channel, ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher "gradually wore down his familiar foe in the final furlong". Third was 5YO entire Relaxed Gesture (Indian Ridge-Token Gesture, by Alzao). The result took English Channel's record to 8 wins from 13 career starts and prizemoney of US$1,969,028.
