Stormy River Wins French Gr1 Jean Prat

Tuesday, 11th July 2006

In Europe, former WA-based Alwyn Park Stud shuttler Verglas (Highest Honor-Rahaam, by Secreto) recorded his 1st Gr1 triumph when consistent colt Stormy River (Verglas-Miss Bio, by River Mist) finished powerfully from the tail of the field to score a half-length victory in France's €400,000 (A$640,000) Gr1 Prix Jean Prat (1600m) for 3YOs at Chantilly. Stormy River (ridden by Thierry Thuillez for trainer Nicolas Clement) defeated Gr3-winners Kentucky Dynamite (Kingmambo-Chelsey Flower, by His Majesty) & Dilek (Sendawar-Diyawara, by Doyoun). At his previous start Stormy River finished runner-up in last month's UK Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes (8 furlongs) at Royal Ascot; that followed a 3rd placing in France's Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains-2000 Guineas (1600m) at Longchamp in May; victories in both France's Gr3 Prix de Fontainbleau (1600m) at Longchamp & Listed Prix Djebel (1400m) at Maisons-Laffitte during April; & runner-up in France's Gr1 Criterium International (1600m) as a 2YO at Saint-Cloud last October. His sire Verglas (who shuttled to Western Australia in 2003 & 2004) stood this season at €10,000 (A$16,000) at the Irish National Stud (after beginning at stud in France in 2000).
