Alexandrova Wins Gr1 Irish Oaks

Monday, 17th July 2006

In Ireland overnight, Coolmore trio Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith's boom filly Alexandrova (Sadler's Wells-Shouk, by Shirley Heights) followed last month's astonishing victory in the Gr1 English Oaks (12 furlongs) at Epsom Downs (when she was 10-lengths behind the leaders at the turn, but unleashed a stunning sprint to leave her rivals in her wake & race away for a 6-lengths victory) by again coming from last-to-first & motoring home for a 4-lengths victory in the €400,000 (A$640,000) Gr1 Darley Irish Oaks (12 furlongs) for 3YO fillies at The Curragh. Alexandrova (ridden by Kieren Fallon for trainer Aidan O'Brien) defeated Scottish Stage (Selkirk-Drama Class, by Caerleon) & English Oaks runner-up Rising Cross (Cape Cross-Woodrising, by Nomination). Alexandrova was a 420,000 guineas (A$1.09m) yearling at the 2004 Tattersalls October sale; she now boasts 3 wins & 3 placings (also including runner-ups in the Gr3 Musidora Stakes at York in May & last year's UK Gr1 Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile at Newmarket) from 7 starts for over A$1.1m prize-money.
