Les Arcs Wins UK Gr1 July Cup

Monday, 17th July 2006

Australian-trained sprinters Takeover Target (7th) & Falkirk (13th) were no match for 6YO gelding Les Arcs (Arch-La Sarto, by Cormorant) who grabbed his 2nd successive UK Gr1 triumph with victory by a head in Europe's most valuable sprint race: the £360,000 (A$864,000) Gr1 Darley July Cup (6 furlongs) at Newmarket in England. Former hurdler Les Arcs (ridden by John Egan for 1st-season trainer Tim Pitt) followed last month's neck victory in the Gr1 Golden Jubilee Stakes (6 furlongs) at Royal Ascot (where Takeover Target finished 3rd) with another close win over Godolphin's fast-finishing 5YO entire Iffraaj (Zafonic-Pastorale, by Nureyev) & 7YO gelding Ashdown Express (Ashkalani-Indian Express, by Indian Ridge). Les Arcs (who finished last in a maiden hurdle at Cartmel just under 2 years ago) scored at 33-1 at Ascot & repeated his success at 10-1 in the July Cup; during the last UK winter, he won 4 races for his young trainer on all-weather surfaces to emerge as a rejuvenated sprinter & overall Les Arcs (the oldest horse to win the July Cup since 1938) now boasts 12 wins from 38 starts for £527,591 (A$1.266m) earnings. After the race, trainer Pitt revealed: "There are 2 races in Japan that we've been looking very closely at. And I wouldn't mind taking him down to Australia for a couple of those races either."
