Paddy Busuttin Returning To NZ

Monday, 17th July 2006

Kiwi trainer Paddy Busuttin will return to NZ next month after a 9-year stint in Singapore. Busuttin, 52, left his former Foxton base in 1997 to go to Singapore where he was among the top 5 trainers in his initial 5 years of operation. His star galloper Bocelli (Lord Ballina-Sweet Vienna, by Dahar) was 2001 Singapore Horse-Of-The-Year & won 9 races for Busuttin (8 in succession) & remains the only horse to complete the prestigious Singapore treble: Patron's Bowl, Singapore Derby Trial & Singapore Derby. Busuttin also campaigned Bocelli in England & HK. Before moving to Singapore, Busuttin (who began training in 1974) also enjoyed many significant wins in NZ, including 3 Wellington Cups, an Auckland Cup, the 1989 NZ Derby & a Kelt Capital Stakes with Castletown (One Pound Sterling-Mona Curragh, by Levmoss). Busuttin (who plans to have about 15 horses in work at his Cambridge stable) purchased a 10ha property in Cambridge a couple of years ago & more recently bought a stable block adjacent to the Cambridge training track in partnership with his son Trent (who will also become a trainer in the future). Busuttin's NZ training operation will be complemented by his move into breeding. He recorded a A$750,000 return for a Redoute's Choice filly from Heavenly Night at this year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney & noted: "My wife Brenda & I own 5 broodmares & we want to get into it commercially, so this has given us a great start." Heavenly Night (purchased by the Busuttins from England) currently has a Redoute's Choice weanling filly.
