Takeover Target & Falkirk Wilt In Final Furlong
Meanwhile the Joe Janiak-trained Takeover Target (who won the Gr2 King's Stand Stakes over 5 furlongs at Royal Ascot on June 20) started 11-2 equal-favourite (with runner-up Iffraaj) in the field of 15 for the Gr1 Darley July Cup, but faded in the last 100m after racing 3rd on the inside rail. Jockey Jay Ford commented: "It was a very below-par performance from him. He travelled well off the 2 leaders early on, but when I asked him for an effort he could not go faster. And when he came off the bridle he was pretty much going up & down in the same spot. He had worked very well before-hand, but it wasn't to be." And the Lee Freedman-trained Falkirk (a fast-finishing 4th in the King's Stand) shared the lead until the final furlong, but then wilted in the final furlong. His jockey Johnny Murtagh summed up: "He was disappointing. He changed his legs a couple of times & might have been feeling the ground today."
