Kentucky Yearlings Day-1: $US1.2m Forestry Colt
Agent John Ferguson (representing the Maktoum family of Dubai) out-bid Californian buyer B. Wayne Hughes & paid US$1.2 million for a Forestry colt which had been "looked at by potential buyers some 200 times in the days leading up to the sale" during this morning's (Australian time) opening session at the 2-day Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Select Yearling Sale at Newton Paddocks in Lexington, reported bloodhorse.com. Ferguson (who noted he first inspected the colt in April & had followed his physical development right up until buying him) commented: "He has continued to thrive; I have always liked him. He is not a particularly heavy horse. He has the physical credentials & also family." The colt (bred in Kentucky by long-time Taylor Made clients Aaron & Marie Jones) was conceived in 2004 when Forestry's fee was US$50,000; it has since doubled to US$100,000 for the 2006 breeding season. The colt's unraced dam Alizea's Song (by Unbridled's Song) was bought by the Joneses for US$850,000 at the 2000 Keeneland July yearling sale; & 2nd dam Alizea (a winning daughter of Premiership) is the dam of Gr1 Fountain Of Youth winner Songandaprayer plus stakes-winners Lifeisawhirl & Island Emperor.
