10 1st-Crop Winners For Freshman Johannesburg

Wednesday, 19th July 2006

In the US, Coolmore shuttler & unbeaten world champion 2YO Johannesburg (Hennessy-Myth, by Ogygian) recorded his 10th 1st-crop winner when debutant colt Marcavelly (Johannesburg-Dark Jewel, by Majestic Light) blitzed his rivals by 7-lengths (despite being trapped wide for much of the race) over 6 furlongs at Belmont Park in New York. Marcavelly (a US$210,000 yearling at the  Keeneland September Sale) hails from the family of US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller. Johannesburg (whose 1st Australian yearlings sold at this year's major sales to a high of $380,000 & averaged over $90,000) will stand the upcoming southern hemisphere season at Coolmore in the NSW Hunter Valley for $27,500.
