Deep Impact Moves To Top Of World Rankings
Shirocco maintained his top position in the latest International Federation Of Horseracing Authorities rankings of the World's Leading Horses, but has been joined by 2005 French Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run & Japanese superstar Deep Impact (the first time a Japanese horse has made the top ranking). All 3 are rated at 125 for the period January 1-July 10. In his only 2 starts this year, Shirocco won the UK Gr2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on May 7 & UK Gr1 Coronation Cup at Epsom on June 2. Hurricane Run won the Irish Gr1 Tattersalls Gold Cup by 7-lengths at The Curragh on May 28 & then finished runner-up (only his 2nd defeat in 9 starts) in the French Gr1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on June 25. Deep Impact (2005 Japanese 3YO Triple Crown winner) has won all 3 starts in 2006 (& 10 of 11 career starts to date); most recently he scored by 4-lengths in the Japanese Gr1 Takarazuka Kinen on June 25. Just below them, a trio of 3YO classic winners are rated on 124: US Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro; UK Gr1 2000 Guineas winner George Washington; & Gr1 Irish Derby winner Dylan Thomas. And on 123 were: Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Electrocutionist; UK Gr1 Eclipse Stakes winner David Junior; & Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic winner Heart's Cry (the only horse to defeat Deep Impact). Two Australian horses made the Top 50 list: Eremein (equal 19th) & Takeover Target (equal 28th).
