Schiaparelli Wins Gr1 Deutsches Derby

Monday, 24th July 2006

In Europe overnight, Schiaparelli (Monsun-Sacarina, by Old Vic) lived up to his family's classic breeding with a 0.75-lengths victory in the €400,000 (A$640,000) Gr1 Deutsches Derby (2400m) for 3YOs at Hamburg. Schiaparelli (ridden by Andrasch Starke for trainer Peter Schiergen) defeated Dickens (Kallisto-Desidera, by Shaadi) & Oriental Tiger (Tiger Hill-Oriental Flower, by Big Shuffle). Bred by Gestut Karlshof, blue-blood Schiaparelli is a full brother to both 2000 Gr1 Deutsches Derby winner Samum & 2002 Gr1 German Oaks winner Salve Regina. At his previous 2 starts, Schiaparelli won the Grosser Preis Der Hannoverschen Volksbank at Hannover on June 5 & then ran 2nd in the Gr1 Deutschland-Preis (2400m) at Dusseldorf on June 25; overall he now boasts 4 wins & a runner-up from 5 starts.
