Aragorn Wins US Gr1 Eddie Read

Tuesday, 25th July 2006

Former Coolmore shuttler Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat-Mariah's Storm, by Rahy) added a Gr1 triumph & major track record when 4YO entire Aragorn (Giant's Causeway-Onaga, by Mr Prospector) collected his 2nd successive Gr1 victory with a 4-lengths blitz of his rivals in the US$400,000 Gr1 Eddie Read Handicap (9 furlongs on turf) at Del Mar, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Irish-bred top-weight Aragorn (ridden by Corey Nakatani for trainer Neil Drysdale) ran 1min 44.79sec to defeat front-running 6YO multiple Gr1-winner Sweet Return (Elmaamul-Sweet Revival, by Claude Monet) who won this race last year & finished 3rd in 2004, with Japanese-bred Gr2-winner Silent Name (Sunday Silence-Danzigaway, by Danehill) finishing 3rd; Willow O Wisp set the previous track record at 1min 45.85sec in the 2005 Gr2 Del Mar Derby. Overall Aragorn now boasts 4 wins (also including the Gr1 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile over 8 furlongs on turf last start on May 29 at Hollywood Park plus last season's Gr2 Oak Tree Derby) & 4 runner-ups (including the Gr1 Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita on March 4 & Gr2 San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on April 29) from 11 starts for US$705,325 earnings for owner-breeder Ballygallon Stud.
