UK Plantation Stud Buys Gr1 Star Araafa

Wednesday, 26th July 2006

In the UK, Dermot O'Rourke's Newmarket-based Plantation Stud has purchased dual Gr1-winning 3YO colt Araafa (Mull Of Kintyre-Resurgence, by Polar Falcon) "to take up stud duties next season," reported racingpost.co.uk. Araafa (winner of the Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas & UK Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month) "will continue his racing career as planned under the care of Jeremy Noseda, including a tilt at next week's Gr1 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood". Plantation chief executive Kevin Buckley confirmed: "We're leasing the horse back to the out-going owners Saleh Al Homaizi & Imad Al Sagar for the rest of the season, culminating in the US Gr1 Breeders' Cup in October." Buckley added: "We've been watching Araafa's career with great interest. He's a Gr1 winner, a Classic winner & a grandson of Danzig, as well as being out of a sister to Pivotal. He's also a lovely looking animal & we felt he would have real appeal to breeders in Britain." Araafa (who has won 3 of 7 starts overall) was originally sold as a foal at UK Tattersalls for 48,000 guineas (A$124,000) & then returned the following year at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 to be resold for 150,000 guineas (A$390,000). Araafa is the 1st stallion purchased by Plantation since O'Rourke bought the historic property last July; at the time, O'Rourke stated his intention to stand a Gr1-winning sire. Under the previous ownership of the late Lord Howard de Walden, Plantation has been home to stallions such as Kris, Slip Anchor & Pursuit Of Love.
