Arlington Chairman Pushes For On-Line Betting

Thursday, 27th July 2006

Chicago's Arlington Park chairman Richard Duchossois told the Illinois Racing Board he is "a strong proponent of internet betting & believes its legalisation in Illinois is of paramount importance" to the future of that state's racing industry, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Duchossois declared: "If we don't get up with technology, we aren't going to exist anymore. We are in more danger than we'd like to admit. We have to change our whole way of life, our whole way of doing business." Duchossois noted illegal off-shore internet gambling sites "are handling an estimated US$50 million (from Illinois bettors), depriving tracks, horsemen & the state treasury of revenue they would receive if the bets were made at either tracks or off-track betting parlors. There's no reason we can't do the same thing. We have the technology but not the legislation."
