Melb Cup Plans For UK Stayer Baddam
The Gr1 Melbourne Cup (over 3200m at Flemington on Tuesday November 7) "is likely to figure on the agenda of this year's dual Royal Ascot winner Baddam provided he performs creditably in the UK Gr2 Goodwood Cup next week," reported racingpost.co.uk. The 4YO (trained by Mich Channon) became the 1st horse for 28 years to pull of the Ascot Stakes-Queen Alexandra double & "has thrived since returning to work at West Ilsley; accordingly, it was decided to make a return to action sooner than the originally intended Doncaster Cup". Channon discussed long-terms plans for Baddam (who also won 3 races last season) with owner Noel Martin & "it was agreed that a laudable effort at Goodwood would merit serious consideration for an adventure to Australia". Channon confirmed: "After his wonderful runs at Royal Ascot, he was given a rest & has come back better than ever. He's one of the easiest to train & he may well be the right type for the Melbourne Cup. It would be the stable's 1st runner in Australia; we had Golden Silca lined up for the Cox Plate a couple of seasons ago, but she didn't get in the race."
