Southern Image Arrives For Widden Season
Kentucky-based Taylor Made/WinStar's 6YO 1st season US sire Southern Image (Halo's Image-Pleasant Dixie, by Dixieland Band) has arrived in Australia to stand the Southern Hemisphere season at Widden Stud in the NSW Hunter Valley at $16,500. Southern Image won 6 of 8 starts (including the Gr1 Malibu Stakes, Gr1 Santa Anita Handicap & Gr1 Pimlico Special Handicap) plus runner-up (beaten a nose) in the Gr1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs in his final race in June 2004 & retired with US$1,843,750 earnings. He stood his initial season at Taylor Made Farms in Kentucky (at US$15,000) under a joint-venture arrangement with WinStar, & Taylor Made director of stallion operations Byron Rogers said he achieved 90% fertility in covering 132 high class mares, noting: "He is a very fertile stallion & has a great disposition to him, which makes him a very easy horse to deal with." Widden's Antony Thompson added: "From the moment it was announced Southern Image would shuttle to Australia, the interest has been enormous. He has received fantastic shareholder support & that has been consolidated by strong support from mare owners outside the syndicate. We expect immense interest in Southern Image at our open days on August 25-26." Among mares already book to visit Southern Image are: Immunity (half-sister to multiple Gr1 winner Landsighting); Miss Doopsy (sister to the dam of multiple Gr1 winner Hollow Bullet); Kin Narita (Gr-1 placed); Lollipop Girl (half-sister to multiple stakes-winner Nanny Maroon); Marvella (sister to stakes-winner Harley Ma); & Desert Slew (half-sister to this year's record-breaking $3 million Redoute's Choice Inglis Easter yearling).
