Angara Wins US Gr1 Diana Handicap
In the US, pensioned Coolmore & former Lindsay Park shuttler Alzao (Lyphard-Lady Rebecca, by Sir Ivor) added a Gr1 triumph when Sangster Family Stable's English-bred 5YO mare Angara (Alzao-Ange Bleu, by Alleged) grabbed victory by a head in 3-way photo-finish to the US$500,000 Gr1 Diana Handicap (9 furlongs over "yielding" turf) for fillies & mares at Saratoga in New York, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Angara (ridden by Fernando Jara for trainer Bill Mott) defeated Gr1-winning 4YO mare Sweet Talker (Stormin Fever-Another Vegetarian, by Stalwart) with a further nose back to 3rd-placed fellow 4YO mare Argentina (Sadler's Wells-Airline, by Woodman). Angara (who finished 3rd in this race last year) won the 2005 Gr1 Beverly D Stakes (8.5 furlongs on turf) at Arlington Park; most recently she finished runner-up in the Gr2 New York Breeders' Cup Handicap at Belmont Park on June 24 & overall now boasts 6 wins (also including the 2005 Gr3 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland) from 19 starts for US$1,071,344 earnings.
