Kildonan Wins SAf Gr1 Champion Stakes

Monday, 31st July 2006

Also on the Champions Day card at Clairwood, unbeaten juvenile colt Kildonan (Rich Man's Gold-Cathay Firth, by Philippi) "pounced at the 500m mark before drawing off to win very impressively" by 1.75-lengths in the R500,000 (A$100,000) Gr1 Premier's Champion Stakes (1600m) for 2YOs, reported SAHorseracing.com. Kildonan (ridden by Weichong Marwing for trainer Mike de Kock) defeated fast-finishing previously unbeaten Biarritz (Count Dubois-Corlia's Bid, by Polish Patriot) & Divine Jury (Jallad-Divine Nymph, by Al Mufti). Kildonan was a R360,000 (A$72,000) yearling & now has 3 wins from 3 starts; his Gr3-winning dam Cathay Firth is a half-sister to Gr1 winner Sound Of Rhum. Rich Man's Gold (imported to South Africa in 2001) sired just 4 crops before his death in 2005; this was his initial Gr1 triumph.
