Volksraad Wins NZ Sires Title

Monday, 31st July 2006

With the NZ 2005-06 season ending today, Windsor Park Stud stallion Volksraad (Green Desert-Celtic Assembly, by Secretariat) has won his 5th successive General Sires premiership, just ahead of Rich Hill Stud-based rival Pentire (Be My Guest-Gull Nook, by Mill Reef). Volksraad is the 1st sire since Foxbridge to win the NZ sires' premiership 5 times running; Foxbridge won 11 NZ sires' titles in-a-row from the 1940-41 season through to the 1950-51 season. Volksraad had 52 individual winners (6 individual stakes-winners) of 87 races this season; his highest earner was Sir Slick (Volksraad-Miss Opera, by Paris Opera). Pentire also had a fantastic season on both sides of the Tasman with 3 individual Gr1 victors: NZ Auckland Cup winner Pentane (Pentire-Tuff One, by Prince Raider), Australia's Brisbane Cup winner Art Success (Pentire-Zabelette, by Zabeel) & NZ Mudgway Stakes-Kelt Capital Stakes winner Xcellent (Pentire-Excelo, by Centro).
