UK Ascot Invite For El Segundo

Friday, 2nd March 2007

Dual Gr1-winning 5YO gelding & "Australia's leading older horse El Segundo (Pins-Palos Verdes, by Oak Ridge) has been invited to run at Royal Ascot this year, but no decisions will be made about his future agenda until he has run at Caulfield (in the Gr1 Futurity Stakes) on Saturday" reported racingpost.co.uk. However "if he were to run at Ascot in June, it would mean he would miss the Melbourne spring meeting later in the year & another crack at the Gr1 Cox Plate, in which he finished a close 2nd last year"; other "potential foreign assignments include the Dubai World Cup meeting on March 31 & QEII Cup in Hong Kong the following month". El Segundo won the Gr1 Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 10 & trainer Colin Little confirmed to The Melbourne Age newspaper: "The owners told me the other day they'd got the invitation to Ascot, so that's one more thing to think about." However Little cautioned: "He's never travelled anywhere, not even to Adelaide or Sydney. The furthest he's been is to Geelong. To go to Dubai 1st time away from home would be a lot to ask. It's a hell of a trip." And on the possibility of racing right-handed in HK, Little added: "His right joint isn't the best, so that might not be ideal either. But HK wouldn't be out of the question." Little concluded: The Futurity is really my major concern at the moment: everything else depends on what he does tomorrow." El Segundo (a NZ$140,000 yearling at the 2003 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale at Karaka) currently boasts 10 wins (also including January's Gr2 Carlyon Stakes, plus the 2006 Gr1 Underwood Stakes & Gr2 Memsie Stakes, as well as the 2005 Gr1 Yalumba Stakes & Listed JRA Cup) & 5 placings (including the 2006 Gr1 Cox Plate & Gr1 Yalumba Stakes) from 19 starts for $1,645,375 earnings.
