Absolute Champion Wins HK Gr1 Chairman's Sprint

Monday, 5th March 2007

Also in Hong Kong yesterday, deceased Gr1 Golden Slipper-winning Newhaven Park Stud stallion Marauding (Sir Tristram-Biscalowe, by Biscay) added a Gr1 triumph when Australian-bred 5YO gelding Absolute Champion (Marauding-Beauty Belle, by Ideal Planet) scored by a short-head in the HK$4.5 million (A$750,000) Gr1 Chairman's Sprint Prize (1200m) at Sha Tin. Formerly known in Australia as Genius And Evil, Absolute Champion (ridden by Australian jockey Brett Prebble for Australian trainer David Hall) defeated Australian-bred 7YO gelding Planet Ruler (Danehill-Sequenza, by Lycius) & NZ-bred fellow 5YO gelding Regency Horse (Stravinsky-Rivertaine, by Centaine). In December Absolute Champion set a new track record in winning the Gr1 Hong Kong International Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin with a performance which subsequently earned him a rating as top sprinter in the world last year from the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings. When he originally raced in Australia as Genius And Evil, the gelding won the Gr2 Pago Pago Stakes as a 2YO & finished 4th in the Gr1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes (as well as 6th in the Gr1 QTC Sires Produce & 5th in the Gr1 T.J.Smith Stakes). Last year in HK he also won October's Gr3 HSBC Premier Bowl (1200m) & most recently finished runner-up in January's Gr1 Centenary Sprint Cup (1000m).
