The Free Stater Wins Liverpool Cup

Monday, 5th March 2007

Woodlands Stud sire & Gr1 Doncaster Handicap winner Over (Dr Grace-Tromper, by Lunchtime) added a group success when 4YO gelding The Free Stater (Over-Papier Mache, by Straight Strike) finished strongly from back in the field to record successive group wins since returning from a 20-weeks spell with victory by a neck in the $100,000 Gr3 Liverpool City Cup (1200m) at Warwick Farm. Equal-favourite The Free Stater (ridden by James Innes for trainer Paul Cave) defeated Gr1-winning 4YO mare Regal Cheer (Arena-Regal Chamber, by Archregent) & front-running 4YO gelding & fellow equal-favourite Century Serb (Nuclear Freeze-Sacred Halo, by Don't Say Halo). The Free Stater (a $50,000 yearling at the 2004 Inglis Classic Sale in Sydney) now has 7 wins (also including last start's Gr3 Frederick Clissold Stakes over 1200m at Randwick on February 10 & the 2006 Listed Hawkesbury Guineas over 1400m) & a runner-up from 11 starts for $306,100 prize-money.
