Monday, 5th March 2007

In Hong Kong yesterday, NZ's Cambridge Stud-based multiple champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) recorded an international Gr1 triumph when Australian-bred 6YO gelding Vengeance Of Rain (Zabeel-Danelagh, by Danehill) snatched victory by a nose in the HK$8 million (A$1.3m) Gr1 HK Gold Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin. Vengeance Of Rain (ridden by Anthony Delpech for trainer David Ferraris) defeated Viva Pataca (Marju-Comic, by Be My Chief) & Bullish Luck (Royal Academy-Wild Vintage, by Alysheba). Vengeance Of Rain (who raced in Australia as Subscribe for Melbourne owner Lloyd Williams before being sold to HK) was a NZ$300,000 yearling at the NZ Bloodstock 2002 Premier Sale at Karaka & subsequently won the Gr1 HK Derby, Gr1 Champions & Chater Cup, Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Gr1 HK International Cup & Gr2 International Cup Trial to finish 2005 as World Racing Series Champion. He then spent 10 months away from the track (including a lengthy spell at Cambridge Stud in NZ) before returning in late 2006 & duly finishing 3rd in the Gr1 Hong Kong International Cup (2000m) on December 10.
