Karaka Friday 1: The Pooka Half-Brother

Tuesday, 6th March 2007

Among the 260 yearlings catalogued for the 1-day NZ Bloodstock Karaka Carnival Sale in Auckland on Friday (March 9) is a half-brother (by Westbury Stud sire Faltaat) to 2YO colt The Pooka (Tobougg-The Banchee, by O'Reilly) who won February's Gr3 Ford Classic (1200m) at Pukekura. The Pooka (originally sold for A$15,000 at the 2005 Inglis Australian Select Weanling Sale in Sydney & then resold for NZ$35,000 at the 2006 NZ Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale at Karaka) boasts 3 wins (also including a 9.5-lengths blitz of his rivals on debut over 1000m at Pukekura in October & January's Gr2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes over 1200m at Trentham) & 2 placings (in NZ's richest 2YO race, the NZ$500,000 Listed NZ Bloodstock Classique over 1200m at Te Rapa on February 5 & Listed Counties Challenge Stakes over 1100m at Ellerslie in November) from 5 starts. The Pooka is set to contest Saturday's Gr1 Ford Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie.
