WA Betfair Ban Heads To High Court

Meanwhile constitutional lawyers "predict a drawn-out & costly legal battle between the West Australian government & the Betfair betting exchange in the 1st significant legal challenges to a company's right to trade across state borders in 20 years" reported The Bulletin magazine. The case "stems from WA banning betting exchanges in January, despite Tasmania licensing Betfair"; WA punters using the exchange face fines up to $10,000 or 2 years in jail. Perth QC Tom Percy (a former director of the WA Racehorse Owners Association) commented: "Everywhere people have been expressing trepidation whether it (the legislation) would stand up. I think it will get the heave-ho in the High Court."
