Wednesday, 7th March 2007

In the US, 5YO mare & 2006 Eclipse Award finalist Gorella (Grape Tree Road-Exciting Times, by Jeune Homme) "has been retired from racing because of an ankle chip" & her breeding plans are still to be finalised, reported bloodhorse.com. Last season Gorella won 4 of her 6 starts (winning the Gr1 Beverly D Stakes, Gr2 Just A Game Handicap & Gr2 First Lady Stakes) & finished 2nd in Eclipse Award balloting for Champion Female behind Ouija Board. French-bred Gorella was initially a French Gr2-winner & 4-times group-placed (including runner-up against the males in the Gr1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp); imported to the US in mid-2005, she finished 3rd in the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at Keeneland in her 1st American start & then ran 3rd in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile. Gorella retires with 7 wins from 17 starts & US$1,456,209 earnings.
