Online Gambling 2: Calls For EU To End Bans
The European Betting Association declared the Court Of Justice decision "put a further nail in the coffin of the state-monopoly model in the gambling sector," reported racingpost.co.uk. And Stanleybet deputy managing director Adrian Morris commented: "It's a landmark verdict. Now we will be looking for the European Commission, which has issued infringement notices against several countries, the courts & member states that are involved in cases to take notice of the ECJ judgement. We would expect Italy & Germany to be the first to take action to eliminate barriers to cross-border betting. We know some countries, France in particular, are lobbying hard against change; but we'd like to see the EC have the courage of its convictions." Ladbrokes chief executive Chris Bell added: "This judgement is another step along the road to fairer competition in Europe & supports our view that the policies of many EU governments are inappropriate in restricting free & fair competition."
