Gaze Wins NZ Gr1 Starcraft Stakes

Monday, 12th March 2007

In New Zealand, Darley shuttler Cape Cross (Green Desert-Park Appeal, by Ahonoora) added a Gr1 triumph when 4YO daughter Gaze (Cape Cross-Eye Full, by Palatable) snatched victory by a half-head (after a 2-horse duel all the way down the straight) in the NZ$200,000 weight-for-age Gr1 Starcraft Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie in Auckland. Gaze (ridden by Mark Du Plessis for trainer Roger James) narrowly thwarted the attempt by front-running 5YO gelding Sir Slick (Volksraad-Miss Opera, by Paris Opera) to win his 4th successive Gr1 race in just 6 weeks, with 7YO gelding Dezigna (Volksraad-Label Basher, by Conquistarose) in 3rd place. Gaze took her record to 7 wins (also including 2006's Gr2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes over 1400m & Australia's Gr3 Doomben Roses over 2020m) & 5 placings (including last month's Gr3 Taranaki Cup over 2000m & 2006's Australian Listed Gold Coast Bracelet over 1800m) from 21 starts.
