Miss Andretti Wins Gr1 Newmarket Handicap

Monday, 12th March 2007

WA-based Wayandah Stud sire Ihtarim (Royal Academy-Welsh Love, by Ela-Mana-Mou) added a Gr1 triumph when favoured 5YO mare Miss Andretti (Ihtiram-Peggie's Bid, by Marooned) notched her 3rd successive Gr1 victory in just 5 weeks when she snatched the lead in the final strides in a 4-way photo-finish to the $1 million Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield. Miss Andretti (ridden by Craig Newitt for trainer Lee Freedman) smashed the course record (running 1min 7.74sec) to score by a head from Gr1-winning boom 3YO filly Gold Edition (Lion Hunter-Glimmers, by Success Express) with a further neck to fast-finishing dual Gr1-winning 5YO gelding Undue (Commands-Influence, by Bletchingly). Miss Andretti now has 16 wins (also including the Gr1 Australia Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley on February 17 & Gr1 Coolmore Lightning Stakes over 1000m at Moonee Valley in course record time on February 5, plus 2006's Gr1 Manikato Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley in course record time in September, Gr2 Schillaci Stakes, Gr3 McEwen Stakes & Listed The Straight Six, as well as 2005's Gr2 Winterbottom Stakes, Gr3 Prince Of Wales Stakes & Listed Ruabon Stakes) & 5 placings (including 2006's Gr1 Salinger Stakes over 1200m & Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m, plus 2005's Listed Crawford Stakes) from 24 starts for $2,112,600 earnings. Miss Andretti will now head to England in late May to tackle Royal Ascot's Gr2 King's Stand Stakes (5 furlongs) on June 19 & Gr1 Golden Jubilee Stakes (6 furlongs) on June 23.
