Gr1-Winning Sire Mat-Boy Dies In Argentina
Champion stayer & 1983 Argentine Horse-Of-The-Year Mat-Boy (Matun-Boyera, by Pastiche) "died of colic at Carlos Blaquier's Haras La Biznaga," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Mat-Boy scored 7 wins as a 3YO & 4YO in Argentina (including both the 1982 & 1983 editions of the Gr1 Gran Premio Republica Argentina). Sent to the US, he won his initial 2 of 3 starts (including the 1984 Gr1 Gulfstream Park Handicap by 12-lengths while lowering the track record for 10 furlongs to 1min 59sec). He retired with 9 wins from 13 starts. Pensioned since 2000, the 28-year-old sire ranked 4th on the Argentine general sire list in 1990, but gained greater prominence as an outstanding broodmare sire. From 724 foals in 14 crops of racing age, Mat-Boy sired 184 winners (42 stakes-winners, including US 1991 Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Festin) for US$8,888,569 progeny earnings. He is also broodmare sire of Peru's 2005-06 champion 2YO male Muller (who won the initial 3 legs of Peru's Cuadruple Crown in 2006).
