NZ 2006 Filly-Of-Year Shikoba Retired To Stud
In New Zealand, last season's champion NZ Bloodstock Filly-Of-The-Year Shikoba (Chief Bearhart-Summary, by Tierce) has been retired to stud following a 4th place effort at Hawke's Bay last Saturday. The decision "was made by Shikoba's trainer Mark Walker in consultation with owner Micaela Murray, with each party believing the mare had not been racing to her true ability since falling at Paeroa on September 23," reported NZ Thoroughbred Marketing. Shikoba (named after the Native American Choctaw tribe's word for "little feather") retires with 7 wins (including the Gr2 Sir Tristram Fillies Classic over 2000m, Gr2 Royal Stakes over 2000m, Gr2 Eight Carat Classic over 1600m & Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes over 1200m) & 5 placings (including the Gr1 Levin Classic over 1600m & Gr1 NZ Stakes over 2000m) from 19 starts. Shikoba (passed-in as a yearling for NZ$30,000 at the 2004 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale at Karaka) "will now return to the Murray farm (where she was originally bred) & a decision is yet to be made as to the sire she will visit in the pending breeding season".
