Bertolini's Gr2-Winning Dam Aquilegia Dies
US Gr2-winner & 18-year-old multiple stakes-producer Aquilegia (who produced English sire & NZ Rich Hill Stud's Darley shuttler Bertolini) "was euthanased after foaling complications at Middlebrook Farm in Kentucky," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. The foal by Coolmore sire Giant's Causeway also died. Aquilegia (Alydar-Courtly Dee, by Never Bend) won the 1993 US Gr3 New York Handicap & 1994 Gr3 Black Helen Handicap (plus 4 other stakes-placings); she was a full-sister to both 1983 champion 2YO filly Althea & Gr2-winner Aishah, as welll as a half-sister to 5 stakes-winners. Her 1st foal Bertolini (a son of Danzig) won England's 1998 Gr3 TNT July Stakes & was subsequently England's leading 2005 1st-season sire in 2005; he stands at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. Aquilegia also is the dam of stakes-winners Amelia & Alchemilla (plus 2 other winners from 6 starters). Offenbach (a winning full-brother to Bertolini) sold for US $2.4 million at the 2002 Keeneland September yearling sale; & Aquilegia's final foal sold for US$1 million at the 2005 Keeneland September sale.
