Princess Coup Wins Gr1 NZ Oaks

Monday, 19th March 2007

In New Zealand, Coolmore stallion Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek by Star Way) added a Gr1 triumph when Australian-bred daughter Princess Coup (Encosta De Lago-Stoneyfell Road, by Sovereign Red) blitzed her rivals by 4.5-lengths victory in the NZ$300,000 Gr1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) for 3YO fillies at Trentham in Wellington. Princess Coup (ridden by Opie Bosson for trainer Mark Walker) sustained a long & wide run from near the tail of the field to grab the leaders in the straight & easily defeat Overkaast (Kaapstad-Daytime, by Heroicity) & multiple Gr2-winner Veloce Bella (Volksraad-Wave To Lottie, by Crested Wave). Princess Coup (a $260,000 yearling at the 2005 Magic Millions Winter Sale on the Gold Coast) took her record to 8 wins (also including last start's Gr3 Lowland Stakes over 2100m at Trentham on March 3 & January's Gr3 NZ Bloodstock Desert Gold Stakes over 1600m at Trentham, plus 2006's Listed Slade Farm Canterbury Stakes over 1600m & Listed Ray Coupland Stakes over 1400m) & 4 placings (including February's Gr2 Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Classic over 2000m at Te Rapa, plus the Gr1 NZ 2000 Guineas over 1600m, Gr1 NZ Bloodstock 1000 Guineas over 1600m & Gr2 Eight Carat Classic over 1600m) from 16 starts for A$479,550 earnings. The win also earned Princess Coup a decisive victory on the final points table for the 10-race 2007 NZ Bloodstock Filly-Of-The-Year series.
