US Gr1-Winning Mare Chelsey Flower Euthanased
In the US, Gr1-winning 16-year-old mare Chelsey Flower (His Majesty-Chelsey Dancer, by Affirmed) was euthanased at Rood & Riddle Equine Clinic in Kentucky "due to complications from foaling," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Chelsey Flower "had difficulty while foaling a Dixie Union colt in & developed further complications during March". Chelsey Flower won 8 of 38 starts (including the 1996 Gr1 Flower Bowl Invitational Handicap & Gr2 Sheepshead Bay Handicap, plus the Gr3 Miss Grillo Stakes & placed in 4 graded stakes) & earned US$568,305. She was subsequently sold in-foal to Storm Cat for US$1.1 million at the 1997 Keeneland November breeding stock sale (the resulting foal colt named Wow placed in 2 stakes). Chelsey Flower's 4th live foal (a Kingmambo colt named Kentucky Dynamite) won France's 2006 Gr3 Prix Paul de Moussac & finished 2nd in the Gr1 Prix Jean Prat.
