New Track Completed At Flemington

Wednesday, 21st March 2007

In Victoria, the final section of the new Flemington Course proper was laid down on Tuesday, completing a 4-month project which commenced immediately following the 2006 Melbourne Cup Carnival. The new track (consisting of kikuyu grass blended with bluegrass & ryegrass) involves 124,000 individual rolls of turf incorporating 35,000 cubic metres of soil; the grass had been growing at Torquay for more than 3 years. The track redevelopment also incorporates 47 kilometres of new drainage pipes. The new track will be given 6 months to consolidate before racing is scheduled to return on Saturday September 8.
