Randwick Closed 6 Weeks For Papal Visit

Wednesday, 21st March 2007

In Sydney "angry trainers yesterday protested at the upheaval next year's Papal visit will cause their business operations at Randwick," reported The Sydney Morning Herald. The newspaper noted "16 trainers who work at the Australian Jockey Club headquarters met to discuss the impact of the event, which is expected to shut down Randwick racecourse for 6 weeks". The NSW Government "has decided Randwick will hold the World Youth Day celebrations, which are tipped to attract a crowd of 500,000". Randwick Trainers Association president Anthony Cummings commented: "There are 730 horses here & they (trainers) must find a home for them. No one is sure how long Randwick will be out of action, but I'd say 6 weeks & it could be 2 months. Tracks will have to be closed & horses have to be relocated."
