California 2YOs: US$1.4m Officer Colt

Thursday, 22nd March 2007

John Ferguson (bloodstock adviser to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum) out-bid Kentucky bloodstock agent John Moynihan (acting for wine mogul Jess Jackson) & paid top price of US$1.4 million for a colt (already named El Official) from the 2nd crop of Officer at the Barretts Equine March sale of Selected 2YOs-In-Training at the Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex Park in Pomona in California. Ferguson told thoroughbredtimes.com the colt (the 3rd foal from 9YO unraced Silver Ghost mare Rovie Wade, a half-sister to 1999 Gr3 Hawthorne Derby winner Minor Wisdom) will go to Godolphin & noted: "When I discussed him with Sheikh Mohammed, he very much felt that he was a horse for Europe. He's the nicest 2YO I've seen at a 2YO sale this year. He's a really, really quality individual whose breeze time (20.8sec for 2 furlongs) compared to some of the times of the best horses who have breezed here in the past." El Official was consigned by Utah-based pin-hookers John Brocklebank & Shane Chipman's BC3 Thoroughbreds as agent for Florida pin-hookers Jimmy & Martha Gladwell (who purchased El Oficial in the name of Ferguson Valley Ranch for US$190,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale). The Gladwells also assist Ferguson in selecting racing prospects & Jimmy Gladwell commented: "If we happen to own a piece of one (that Ferguson is interested in buying), it's out of our hands. If we don't, we're more involved in the decision. But at the end of the day, John & Sheikh Mohammed make the decision."
