Munce Update 1: Mother Visits HK Jail

Thursday, 22nd March 2007

Australian jockey Chris Munce's mother Gail (just returned from visiting her son in Hong Kong's Tung Tai Jail) told Radio 4TAB: "We had 2 lovely visits with him, which were pretty nice under the circumstances. He's in a low security section of what they call Tung Tai correctional institution. It really wasn't what we expected. The attitude of the wardens was quite nice & I'm hoping that's how they treat him when we're not there. It was very emotional: he isn't in a cell, because its low security; he's in more like a dormitory with 20 other in-mates. They certainly don't have any privacy, but it could have been a lot worse. They have a normal work program from 9am-4pm where they could be working in the library or in the dining room. He doesn't have a bed as such, which is pretty awful; its more like a plastic-type bunk thing with some blankets rolled up on it & a pillow & sheets, but there's no mattress as such."
