Benson Partners Buy US 4YO Paullinus For Racing & Stud

Friday, 23rd March 2007

Australian breeder Bill Benson & partners have purchased regally-bred US 4YO Paullinus (A.P.Indy-Lailani, by Unfuwain) as a racing & breeding prospect. Paullinus (whose dam won Gr1 races in both the US & Ireland) was bred by Gainsborough Farm in Kentucky & Benson confirmed: "He will ship to Toronto now & race his way into stakes company in Canada. You rarely get well-topped, good-sized stallion prospects with this sort of pedigree. It really is quite stunning & I see Lailani has just had a Kingmambo foal at Gainsborough, so there is every chance the pedigree page can improve further. I can see him winning at stakes level in Canada, then either standing there or coming down to Australia. We only have 1 son of A.P.Indy in Australia & he is expected later this year to commence his 1st stud season. He is Bernadini & he'll stand at Darley for probably $100,000; so if we can score at stakes level with Paullinus, who like Bernadini is from a Gr1-winning mare, then he could represent tremendous value as an alternative A.P.Indy stallion." Paullinus (who at his latest start finished 4th at Aqueduct in New York earlier this month for top trainer Kiaran McLaughlin) also boasts a significant Australian connection: he is closely related to the fastest 6 furlongs turf horse to race in the US, Keep The Faith (Sunday Silence-Duelling Girl, by Dayjur) who won an allowance race at Belmont Park in 1min 6.82sec & then finished 3rd in the Gr2 Kelso Breeders' Cup at Belmont over 8 furlongs. Keep The Faith stood his debut season in Australia this year at Victoria's Swettenham Stud & covered 150 mares. Benson (who owns Emerald Thoroughbreds Farm in NSW & over 100 mares) summed up: "Paullinus is a genuine world class stallion prospect on breeding. He will go to Blair Miller's barn in Canada & our fingers are crossed henceforth."
