Handsome Ransom To Stand At Wellfield Lodge

Monday, 26th March 2007

Meanwhile NZ's Palmerston North-based Wellfield Lodge "is moving into the thoroughbred stallion business for the 1st time & will stand Australian-bred sire Handsome Ransom (Red Ransom-Bianca Lancia, by Mill Reef)) this year," reported NZ Thoroughbred Marketing. Owners Bill Gleeson & Peter Didham "have decided to buy a controlling interest in Handsome Ransom (who will be re-locating from his former home at Ashwell Farm in Cambridge)". The decision to stand Handsome Ransom coincides with the recent decision to double the size of the Wellfield Lodge property from 50 hectares to 100 hectares following the acquisition of the next-door neighbour's farm. Gleeson commented: "It was not part of our original plan, when we bought Wellfield Lodge, to stand a stallion. When Handsome Ransom became available, we moved quickly to try to purchase him, as having supported him in his 1st 2 years at stud I believe he has all the credentials to be a huge chance at stud. I will be supporting him accordingly, by breeding a number of my top mares to him & racing a number of his stock to make sure he receives every opportunity to attain the success he deserves." At Ashwell, Handsome Ransom covered 106 mares in his 1st season & 102 last season. Ashwell principal Ray Knight has retained an interest in Handsome Ransom & will also be sending broodmares to him this year.
