UK Stayer Young Mick Aims At Melb Cup

Monday, 26th March 2007

In the UK, George Margarson "is planning a Royal Ascot return for 5YO gelded stayer Young Mick (King's Theatre-Just Warning, by Warning) with a shot at the Gr1 Melbourne Cup on his long term agenda," reported racingpost.co.uk. Young Mick "was crowned 2006 All-Weather Horse-Of-The-Year & Handicapper-Of-The-Year at the UK Racehorse Owners Association-Racing Post Horseracing Awards in December, following a meteoric rise from banded races to Gr3 glory in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot last September"; after winning at Wolverhampton in January 2006, Young Mick "went on to notch 9 further successes on turf & Polytrack during a busy campaign that spanned 19 outings". Young Mick "was touted as a possible for the Melbourne Cup" last year, "but connections decided to postpone those plans because of his arduous season". Margarson commented: "Young Mick looks like Ed Dunlop's hack at the moment, as I let him down over winter after all those runs as a 4YO. The plan is to get him back around May-June time & start him off in the Gr2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 23 & then hopefully give him 3 or 4 runs before the Melbourne Cup. It won't be as easy for him this time around as he will be mixing with the big boys, but hopefully we will be in Australia come November."
