Horse-Of-Year & Sire Mat-Boy Dies In Argentina

In South America, former Argentine Horese-Of-The-Year & "record-setting US Gr1-winner at Gulfstream Park" Mat-Boy (Matun-Boyera, by Pastiche) died aged 28, reported bloodhorse.com. On the track Mat-Boy notched 9 wins from 13 starts; "after he had run out of competition in Argentina", he moved to the US & easily won the 1984 Gr1 Widener Handicap at Hialeah, followed by a 12-lengths blitz in the Gr1 Gulfstream Park Handicap (10 furlongs) in a track-record 1min 59sec. Upon retirement he returned to Haras La Biznaga in his native Argentina & sired numerous Gr1-winners, including Gran Premio Nacional (Argentine Derby) winner Fanatic Boy (who subsequently won a US graded-stakes at Del Mar in 1993) & Festin (who won the 1991 US Jockey Club Gold Cup, Gr1 Oaklawn Handicap & Gr2 Nassau County Handicap.
