UK Horse Trust Warning On African Sickness
In the UK, equine welfare & research organization The Horse Trust "has warned the British horse industry is at risk from African horse sickness," reported thoroughbredinternet.com. The Horse Trust "will spearhead an education campaign to make owners aware of the possibility of an AHS outbreak (spread by biting midges, which can be carried for up to 100km on the wind, rather than by contact between infected horses) & likely symptoms in the horse population". AHS outbreaks occur annually in southern Africa, "but the increase in global warming has led to the migration of the disease-carrying midges further north into Europe."
