Scat Daddy Wins US Gr1 Florida Derby

Monday, 2nd April 2007

In the US, Coolmore shuttler Johannesburg (Hennessy-Myth, by Ogygian) added a Gr1 triumph when favoured colt Scat Daddy (Johannesburg-Love Style, by Mr Prospector) "cemented his status as a leading Gr1 Kentucky Derby contender" with a 1.25-lengths victory in the US$1 million Gr1 Florida Derby (9 furlongs) for 3YO colts & geldings at Gulfstream Park, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Scat Daddy (ridden by Edgar Prado for trainer Todd Pletcher) defeated fast-finishing Gr2-winning colt Notional (In Excess-Truly Blessed, by French Deputy) & Chelokee (Cherokee Run-Dixie Ghost, by Silver Ghost). Kentucky-bred Scatt Daddy (a US$250,000 yearling at the Keeneland September Sale) now has 5 wins (also including last start's Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Gulfstream Park on March 3, plus 2006's Gr1 Champagne Stakes over 8 furlongs at Belmont Park & Gr2 Sanford Stakes over 6 furlongs at Saratoga) & 2 placings (in 2006's Gr1 Hopeful Stakes & February's Gr3 Holy Bull Stakes) from 8 races for US$1,334,300 earnings. Part-owner Michael Tabor (who races Scat Daddy in partnership with James Scatuorchio) confirmed Scat Daddy will now have a 5-weeks lay-off until the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 5.
