Sir Slick Wins NZ Awapuni Cup

Monday, 2nd April 2007

Windsor Park Stud's multiple champion sire Volksraad (Green Desert-Celtic Assembly, by Secretariat) added a group success when 5YO gelding Sir Slick (Volksraad-Miss Opera, by Paris Opera) continued his extraordinary streak of the last 9 weeks (3 successive Gr1 triumphs followed by a Gr1 runner-up & then twin Gr2 victories at his latest 2 starts) with a decisive 4.5-lengths margin in the NZ$100,000 weight-for-age Gr2 Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m). Hot favourite Sir Slick (ridden by Bruce Herd for trainer Graeme Nicholson) defeated 7YO gelding All Square (Vyner's Orb-Westerley Belle, by Balmerino) & 4YO mare Arabian Nights (Almutawakel-Miz Denier, by Tights). Sir Slick (a NZ$48,000 yearling at the 2003 NZ Bloodstock Select Colts Sale) took his record to 14 wins (also including last start's Gr2 Japan-NZ International Trophy over 1600m at Tauranga on March 24, plus the Gr1 Otaki-Maori over 1600m on February 24, Gr1 Whakanui Stud International Stakes over 2000m on February 10 & Gr1 Thorndon Mile over 1600m on January 27, as well as the Listed Anniversary Handicap over 1600m on January 20 & 2006's Gr3 Tauranga Classic over 1550m, Listed Postponed Anzac Handicap over 1600m & Gr2 NZ-Japan International Trophy over 1600m) & 17 placings (including the Gr1 Starcraft Stakes over 2000m at Ellerslie on March 10, plus the Gr2 Rich Hill Mile over 1600m at Ellerslie on January 6, as well as 2006's Gr1 Captain Cook Stakes over 1600m, Gr3 Merial Metric Mile over 1600m & G3 Great Northern Challenge Stakes over 1600m) from 54 starts.
