South Africa Yearlings: $200k Galileo Colt
Trainer Mike Bass paid top price of R1.2 million (A$200,000) for a colt by Coolmore shuttler Galileo (already named Saxon St Kurling) during the Vintage Yearling Sale at Durbanville in South Africa's Cape Province. The colt (out of Last Tycoon mare Elfenjer) is a half-brother to Gr1-winning Australian-bred 3YO filly Sun Classique (a daughter of former Arrowfield Stud shuttler Fuji Kiseki) who won January's South African Gr1 Majorca Stakes over 1600m against older rivals at Kenilworth & December's Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas also 1600m at Kenilworth (plus the Gr3 Diana Stakes & runner-up in both the Gr1 Paddock Stakes & Gr1 Thekwini Fillies Stakes); Sun Classique (who overall boasts 6 wins & 3 placings from 9 starts) was born & raised at Widden Stud in the NSW Hunter Valley prior to her export to South Africa in June 2004. South African owner-breeder Lionel Cohen's Equimark paid A$32,500 for her dam Elfenjer (also dam of this Galileo colt) at the 2003 Inglis Broodmare Sale; Elfenjer is a daughter of Gr1 SAJC Oaks winner Gamine.
