TRSA Releases 5-Year Strategic Plan
Thoroughbred Racing South Australia released a 5-year "strategic blueprint for the future of the thoroughbred racing industry in SA. The report (titled A Strategic Direction For Thoroughbred Racing In South Australia 2007-2012) makes several key recommendations regarding track rationalisation & club mergers including: a merger of Gawler & Balaklava racing clubs to form 1 super club based at an upgraded Gawler track; a merger of Murray Bridge & Strathalbyn racing clubs (& potentially Oakbank & Mindarie-Halidon clubs) into 1 entity based at a redeveloped Murray Bridge facility; & a merger of Naracoorte & Penola racing clubs. The report also proposes the number of races held at certain venues be dramatically reduced or cut altogether in favour of holding more races at fewer but better quality venues. Currently 185 race meetings are held every year across 24 venues by 25 individual clubs; the report recommends that ratio be significantly altered, with up to 130 meetings (70%) staged at 4 key venues: Morphettville; Victoria Park; Murray Bridge; & Gawler. The report also signals the introduction of synthetic surfaces for racing & expansion of training to reduce water consumption & operational costs (including a 2nd track at Allan Scott Park Morphettville).
